Teenagers Learn About Aviation at a Special Summer Camp
The Camp Encourages More Women Into Aviation
DULUTH, Minn.- Fifteen to 19 year old students are trying their hand at operating a flight simulator, building propellers, and even experiencing a flight in one of Lake Superior College’s aircraft, at the aviation summer camp held each year.
Women make up only 2-percent of aviation engineers, and this camp aims to change that by offering two different options. A co-ed camp, and a camp specifically for young women. The camp for women offers the same hands on experience as the co-ed camp, but was created to encourage women to give the aviation industry a try.
“I’ve talked to a lot of the people at the airshow and I said if they have any interest in aviation whatsoever this camp is something to come here and see if this is something for them. I’ve actually had a few of them come this year,” said Will Beecroft, an Aviation Maintenance Instructor for LSC.
The camp also includes talks by people working in the industry and tours of local aviation businesses.
The free camp started Monday and will go through Friday.
