It’s the Summer Solstice
It's the Longest Day of the Year
DULUTH, Minn.- The summer solstice is Tuesday and while many people are celebrating the longest day of the year, the solstice is a special day for Wiccans and pagans.
For pagans, the summer solstice is a celebration of fire, and centuries ago, was also a time to celebrate the ripeness and fullness of growing crops. Lady Ocalat of the Lady Ocalat’s Emporium recommends celebrating the day by eating good food, getting outdoors and having a bonfire, or lighting candles if you can’t get outside.
“The fires were lit for safety and to ward against evil and the darkness, and the integration of dark and light too, and that darkness is important too and that fire is a beautiful thing,” said Lady Ocalat, owner of Lady Ocalat’s Emporium.
The word solstice comes from latin and means sun stands still.
