MLK Community Service Held at St. Mark’s AME Church
Activities Have Been Held Throughout the Northland All Weekend
A community worship service was held at St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday in honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“Dr. King was the one who galvanized us and spoke so clearly about the issues and inspired us to move forward,” said Reverend Marchelle Hallman, chaplain of the Minnesota Department of Corrections Facility, who addressed the theme “Civil and Right: Are you living the dream?”
“It’s important to remember Dr. King, but it’s also important to remember there were very many people who have worked for civil rights in this nation,” said Rev. Hallman.
She spoke about racial inequality that people of color, specifically of African descent, have experienced historically, and still experience today.
“The issue is not an African American issue, but it is an issue of humanity and how we treat and love one another, and that we’re called to love one another extravagantly,” said Rev. Hallman.
A Martin Luther King community breakfast, march and rally will be held on January 18 in Duluth.
