Neighborhood Youth Services Celebrates 25 Years in Hillside Neighborhood
The Program Sees 40 to 70 Students On a Daily Basis
DULUTH, Minn.- Seiquayia Morris was first introduced to the Neighborhood Youth Services around a decade ago, as a student.
“My family was we were living in poverty, and it was just a place to come and get away from troubles and help get tutored with homework, I mean it was a great dynamic of culture here and sense of family,” said Morris.
It’s a free after school program that helps tutor students, give them a meal, and a place to be while their parents were at work. And to this day she credits the program for many of the successes she has had in her life.
“I would come every day after school I mean, I became part of the dance team, drill team that I had here, after graduation I became a tutoring with kids, so kind of growing up here and giving back as well,” said Morris.
The program has been servicing the Duluth Hillside Neighborhood for a quarter of a century and Sunday, they invited the community to celebrate their milestone with music, games, bouncy houses and food.
“We also have the fire department and police department here because they make a big impact on our community and definitely support our kids and family as well,” said Princess Kisob, the Program Director of NYS.
The celebration was made up of all family and child friendly activities, because the program has always been about the kids.
“Kids are the future, so we need to be investing our time and energy with them,” said Kisob.
