City Council Approves Gender Neutral Bathrooms on Park Point
Duluth city councilors voted unanimously to designate the two new bathrooms at the Lafayette Community Center as gender neutral
DULUTH, Minn. – New bathrooms at Park Point’s Lafayette Community Center will be gender neutral.
During a special session Friday afternoon, Duluth city councilors voted unanimously to designate the two new bathrooms as gender neutral. The councilors tabled a vote during Monday’s meeting after councilor Gary Anderson spoke out about the original plan not including a gender neutral facility.
“I’m grateful the city council was able to do our jobs, which is to be a check policy and staff actions,” said Anderson. “In this case, we were able to take quick action and the administration was able to take action. We’re coming forward with a plan that will be good for all of the community.
The addition is expected to keep the public from going to the bathroom in the dunes and beach grass, as the nearest public restroom is at the Park Point Beach House nearly two miles away.
The new bathrooms will be located on the beach side of the community center and are expected to cost $239,000. Construction will begin later this summer.
