First Saltie of the Season
The Federal Weser docked in the Twin Ports Thursday Night
SUPERIOR, Wis.- The Federal Weser vessel made its way through Duluth and docked in the superior side of the harbor Thursday evening.
And today the Duluth seaway port authority hosted the first ship ceremony this afternoon to welcome the captain and 22 member crew who began their voyage in Romania.
Numerous gifts were given to the crew, including many that are connected to the twin ports.
“The first time in my career that i’m finding a city that is coming down to welcome us so thank you very much it’s a great place” said Captain Umesh C. Sharma.
The ceremony not only serves as a hopeful sign of spring but also a reminder of the importance of the twin ports
“We sit and wait for those 10 weeks, 12 weeks that we don’t see ships moving and so that very first one that comes in does remind us that this is an international seaport” said Port Authority Public Relations Director, Adele Yorde.
The ship is expected to depart either Tuesday or Wednesday, transporting twenty one thousand and four hundred tons of wheat to Algeria.
Four more salties are expected to make their way to the Duluth–Superior port in the next few weeks.
