This weekend, bow hunting season starts in Northern Minnesota.
It’s a sport that attracts hunters looking for big and small game.
In this week’s Great Outdoors we take a look at archery.
“Archery has been a really big growing sport these last few years,” explained John Chalstrom, Co-Owner of Chalstrom’s on Rice Lake Road.
The sports hit a bullseye for younger generations interested in the Hunger Games.
“This last five years the biggest growth market in archery has been youth, especially young ladies,” said Chalstrom.
The sport of bow hunting begins in September and unlike rifle season, goes through December.
“Archery you can have a little bit more of a laid back approach because it is a nice long season,” said Chalstrom.
The peaceful activity can initially be expensive to get into.
“Like any decent hobby when you buy the real good quality equipment it is fairly expensive, but once you get set up with it archery can be one of the most affordable sports around,” explained Chalstrom.
You can shoot the same arrows for years, unless you lose them.
“It’s a challenging sport. It’s something that you have to work at a little bit and continue to keep some practice going,” said Chalstrom.
If you don’t want to invest $500 or more to test out the sport, Chalstrom’s has demo bows.
“Get someone out of the range with some of our demo equipment and we can show them the fundamentals, get them shooting and then we just stand back and let them shoot,” said Chalstrom.
As the sport continues to grow it has become more user-friendly and inclusive, appealing to people of all ages and abilities.
If you’re looking to sight in your bow for the fall’s bow hunt adults can shoot for $8 at Chalstrom’s.
