Kim Yong Nam served as head of the Supreme People’s Assembly from 1998 to April 2019. That post is North Korea’s nominal head of state, though the true power was held by the Kim family that has ruled the North since 1948.

G2 or not G2: Trump’s new favorite term for US-China relations carries a lot of history’s baggage

President Donald Trump has suggested his outlook to the U.S.-China relationship with a six-word post on Truth Social. He mentioned the “G2,” a term suggesting equal power between the U.S. and China, before a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Oct. 30 in Busan, South Korea. This term, first proposed in 2005, has come to imply a power balance that Beijing desires. Experts say this could delight China but worry U.S. allies, especially those in the Indo-Pacific region. Chinese commentators noted the term’s use, suggesting a move toward a bipolar world. The concept was once explored but later discredited by Washington.

That candidate, Zohran Mamdani, has won over many progressive Jewish voters with vows to make the city more affordable and equitable. Yet he has alarmed many other Jews — in New York and across the U.S. — with harsh criticism of Israeli policies, including assertions that its military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide.

Anatomy of a news story: ’60 Minutes’ invites audience into the editing process with Trump interview

CBS News’ “60 Minutes” gave its audience a rare opportunity by releasing a full, unedited video and transcript of its interview with President Donald Trump. The edited interview ran for 28 minutes on the broadcast Sunday. When Norah O’Donnell sat down with the president last Friday for the taping, the full interview ran for 73 minutes. Viewers were able to see the choices “60 Minutes” made in editing for newsworthiness and clarity and to avoid repetition. While it’s a transparency that some welcomed, critics say it could also open up journalists to repeated arguments about the choices they make in crafting stories.

Republicans seek to tap into Trump energy on eve of Election Day in New Jersey, Virginia

New Jersey Republicans are trying to ride the coattails of President Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral momentum. Gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Virginia candidate Winsome Earle-Sears are crisscrossing their respective states, while Trump is expected to speak at telephone rallies with voters later Monday. This comes after their Democratic opponents Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger campaigned over the weekend alongside former President Barack Obama. Ciattarelli spent time Monday courting voters in a key traditionally Democratic stronghold that contributed to Trump’s gains in New Jersey. It’s a delicate balance for Republicans, who want to catch some of Trump’s electoral energy while not dismissing concerns about increasing costs.

Trial starts for assault case against DC man who tossed sandwich at federal agent on viral video

A trial has begun for a former government attorney charged with assault for throwing a sandwich at a federal agent. A grand jury refused to indict Sean Charles Dunn on a felony charge. Convicting him of a misdemeanor could be an equally tough task for prosecutors. A video that went viral on social media captured Dunn hurling his subway-style sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection agent outside a nightclub on the night of Aug. 10. The incident turned Dunn into a symbol of resistance against President Donald Trump’s law-enforcement surge in the nation’s capital.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is blaming foreigners for last week’s deadly protests following a disputed election in which two main opposition candidates were barred. In her first comments after being sworn in Monday for another term, she acknowledged the “loss of lives.” It is not clear how many people were killed in the violence around the Oct. 29 election as demonstrators took to the streets of major cities to demand that vote-counting be stopped. The military was deployed. Internet connectivity has been on and off in the East African nation, disrupting travel and other activities.

Judges in Rhode Island and Massachusetts ruled separately on Friday that the administration must continue to pay for SNAP but left it to the administration to decide whether to fund it entirely or with partial payments in November. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it would freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program starting Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown.

What to do if your flight is delayed or canceled during the US government shutdown

The U.S. government shutdown has now dragged on for over a month, and shortages of air traffic controllers are straining operations — with flight disruptions piling up nationwide. The situation may well get worse the longer the shutdown goes and workers go without a paycheck. And there is no way to predict what airports might have problems on any given day. So be sure to check your flight’s status before you head to the airport. If your flight is canceled, airlines will rebook you on a later flight. If you no longer want to take the trip, you should be able to get a refund. But each airline’s policies can differ, and airlines are not required to pay cash compensation.

Powerful 6.3 earthquake hits northern Afghanistan, killing 20 and damaging historic Blue Mosque

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake has shaken northern Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 640 others. The quake struck before dawn on Monday, damaging the historic Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif. In the town of Khulm, near the epicenter, residents have been digging through the rubble of collapsed homes. The impoverished country often struggles to respond to natural disasters, especially in remote regions. The Ministry of Defense announced that rescue and emergency teams have reached the affected areas. The United Nations in Afghanistan said its teams are on the ground assessing needs and delivering urgent aid.

Famine spreads to two more areas in Sudan, global hunger authority says

The world’s leading authority on hunger crises says famine has spread to two regions in war-torn Sudan. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification says famine has been detected in el-Fasher city in Darfur and Kadugli town in South Kordofan province. Paramilitary forces rampaged through the besieged el-Fasher last week, reportedly killing hundreds of people. Sudan has been torn apart since April 2023 by a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The U.N. says more than 40,000 people have been killed, but aid groups believe the true number could be much higher.

After mistaken deportation, Abrego Garcia fights smuggling charges. Here’s what to know

The man whose mistaken deportation galvanized opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies is charged in federal court in Tennessee with human smuggling. A judge this week will hear arguments on Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s motion to dismiss the charges on the grounds of “vindictive prosecution.” The judge previously found some evidence to support the motion. The judge cited a statement by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche that seemed to suggest the Justice Department charged Abrego Garcia because he won his wrongful-deportation case. The local prosecutor in Tennessee argues Blanche’s statements are irrelevant because he’s not the person who made the decision to indict. Abrego Garcia is a Salvadoran citizen who’s lived in Maryland for years.

Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa have all spent the race’s final stretch campaigning at a frenetic pace across the city’s five boroughs as they make their case to succeed outgoing Mayor Eric Adams. In recent days, Mamdani went dancing with seniors in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Cuomo dined in the Eastern European enclave of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and Sliwa went to a mosque in the Bronx.

In Gaza cemeteries, some displaced Palestinians live among the dead

Skeletons are neighbors for some Palestinians in Gaza who found nowhere else but cemeteries to shelter from the war. Gravestones have become seats and tables for families in a dusty, sun-baked cemetery in the southern city of Khan Younis. Some 30 families shelter there. The vast majority of Gaza’s population of over 2 million people has been displaced by the two years of war between Hamas and Israel. With the ceasefire that began on Oct. 10, some have returned to what remains of their homes. Others are still crowded into the strip of remaining territory that Israeli forces don’t control.

What’s on the ballot in the first general election since Donald Trump became president

Donald Trump features prominently in state and local elections happening Tuesday, a year after he retook the White House. These elections are the first general contests of his second term. The results could either support or challenge his agenda. Key races include the governor’s seats in Virginia and New Jersey, the New York City mayoral race, and a California proposition on redistricting. More than half of the states have contests. The outcomes could indicate voter sentiment toward Trump’s presidency and influence future political strategies.

Judge again bars Trump administration from deploying troops to Portland

A federal judge in Oregon has once again barred President Donald Trump’s administration from deploying the National Guard to Portland, Oregon until at least Friday. Trump appointee U.S. District Court Judge Karin Immergut issued the ruling Sunday after a three-day trial and says she will issue a final ruling on Friday. Both sides argued over whether protests at the city’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building met the conditions set out by Congress for using the military domestically. Immergut says she found “no credible evidence” that protests grew out of control in Portland before Trump federalized the troops.

In an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” that aired on Sunday, Trump predicted that Democrats will eventually capitulate to Republicans. Trump’s comments signal that the shutdown could continue to drag on for some time as federal workers, including air traffic controllers, are set to miss additional paychecks and as there is uncertainty over whether 42 million Americans who received federal food aid will be able to access the assistance.

Jaguars’ Cam Little kicks a 68-yard field goal to break Justin Tucker’s NFL record

Cam Little of the Jacksonville Jaguars has broken an NFL record by kicking a 68-yard field goal. Little converted the kick at the end of the first half against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Justin Tucker had the previous record, a 66-yarder in 2021 that gave the Baltimore Ravens a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. While Tucker’s kick hit the crossbar, Little’s boot had plenty of room as it sailed through the uprights. Little came into the game having missed three of his last four kicks, including an extra-point attempt. But the Jaguars’ coaches insisted they had faith in the second-year pro, who hit a 70-yarder in the preseason.

Rico Dowdle’s big day and Ryan Fitzgerald’s big kick give Panthers 16-13 win over Packers

Rico Dowdle rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and his big run in the final minute set up Ryan Fitzgerald’s last-second 49-yard field goal as the Carolina Panthers beat Green Bay 16-13. The Packers’ three-game winning streak ended, and they lost star tight end Tucker Kraft to a knee injury in the third quarter. Dowdle had been splitting time with Chuba Hubbard, but Panthers coach Dave Canales said Dowdle would get the bulk of the carries, and the move paid off. He made one big mistake, getting flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after a touchdown. But his 19-yard run got the Panthers in range for the winning kick.
