As part of May’s Older Americans Month a campaign is underway to shed light on seniors and their struggle with hunger.
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank has seen use among seniors at area food shelves double in the last five years, partially due to the downturn in the economy.
They along with Feeding America are raising awareness about the issue and helping to meet the demand by providing millions of pounds of food regionally and across the country.
“Seniors face more chronic health issues,” Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank executive Director Shaye Moris said. “Of course if we can provide nutrition to stabilize them that’s really important work.”
To help out you can donate, advocate for safety programs supporting seniors regionally and volunteer to deliver food to seniors who are home bound.
