Proposal to Bring Bike Lanes to Pecan Avenue
Plans to Re-stripe Road, Add Transportation Options in Duluth

Pecan Avenue in Duluth is 48–feet gutter to gutter.
Right now, it’s a four–lane road with two lanes of traffic in each direction.
A proposal is on the table to re-stripe the road, making it two lanes, with one lane of traffic in each direction, a middle turn lane, and adding two bike lanes, one in each direction.
The road stretches from East Central Entrance to Rice Lake Road, and right now, has only 2,000 vehicle trips per day, which officials say doesn’t justify four lanes.
To put it in perspective, Arrowhead Road, which also has four lanes, has over 10,000 vehicle trips per day.
City officials say drivers will lose nothing, bikers will gain everything, and this project is a nice way to add transportation options in Duluth.
“It may look like this section of the bike lane is by itself, but it does actually feed into a diverse trail, and every time we have a chance to make our bike lanes longer and better, we jump at it,” said Steven Robertson, Senior Planner for the City of Duluth.
The road is already getting resurfaced this summer, so re-striping it would not require additional work, and would cost next to nothing.
The road will be accessible during the entire construction process
This project is citizen-driven. Someone who lives in the neighborhood proposed the idea of adding these bike lanes.
