Belknap project development leaders have done a lot of preliminary design, investigating everything from pavement structure to traffic and environmental safety and aesthetics.

They are even visiting with property owners to gain more perspective.

The $21 million reconstruction project will start from Banks to Hill Avenue.

Upgrades will include adding left turn lanes, safety medians, brand new storm sewer systems, shared vehicle and bike lanes as well as green space.

“It’s a lot of project, there’s a lot of work to be done,” said Stephanie King with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “I think it will be a good solution. It’s always a good solution when we’re working on the same design team. We’ve had really good results on Tower Avenue and we hope to have the same along here.”

During construction, one lane in each direction will be closed along with restricted access to Belknap businesses.

Detours will be available.

The project is expected to start April of 2017 and run through 2018.

A public hearing about the development will be held on June 2 from 4:00-6:30 p.m. in the Government Center.

Belknap has three times the state average for crashes due to lack of infrastructure.

Project officials believe the added technology and upgrades will increase the level of safety for drivers.
