Reconstruction on a highly used runway at the Duluth International Airport is set for next April.

The middle portion of Runway 9/27 will be reconstructed due to its age and condition.

The project was pushed up for safety reasons.

“Clearly the infrastructure that is out there is the most critical for our air commerce, 148th and general aviation,” said Marking and Communications Director for the airport, Natalie Peterson.

One of the potential concerns was the displacement of the 148th Fighter Wing.

“When we were advised that the 148th jets would be off base and located somewhere else for the time being. It gave us a great opportunity because our biggest fear was having to relocate those jets,” said Peterson.

The concrete pavement on Runway 9/27 has been in place since the 1940’s.

The last total reconstruction was done in 1956.

The estimated total project cost is $20,000,000.
