Some UW-Superior students spent the morning at Wisconsin Point Beach cleaning up the beach and completing a beach health assessment.
Thirty to forty chemistry and biology majors took part.
The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup program, in which volunteers in Canada and states bordering the Great Lakes pitch in to clean-up plastic debris.
It’s a topic that is important to UWS’s Dr. Rios.
“Collect the plastic, count it and to see how much plastic that we have on the beach that can go to the Great Lakes, the Lake Superior in this case,” said UWS Instructor Dr. Lorena Rios.
Dr. Rio’s plastic research was recently featured in legislation in Wisconsin that will someday ban the use of plastic micro-beads.
