September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and a race is being held this weekend for the cause.
SAVE, or Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, is hosting a race at Leif Erikson Park.
The 5K run and walk is called Emotions in Motion. The proceeds will benefit programs used to educate people about depression and suicide.
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, according to SAVE.
“My father committed suicide about three and a half years ago, and I also had another relative that passed away from suicide about a year and a half ago,” said Alyssa Johnsen, the organizer of the event.
Johnsen said connecting with others at the event who had lost loved ones helped her with the grieving process.
The event includes a raffle, music, and resources.
