Duke Professor Talks ‘Colorblind Racism’ To UMD Students
A prominent professor visited Duluth Wednesday to give a racial presentation at UMD.
Duke University’s Chair of Sociology, Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, gave a lecture on his theory of “colorblind racism.”
Simply stated, the belief that race is unimportant in society allows racial inequality to continue, according to the doctor.
“So if you say that you’re for equal opportunity and then you are framing affirmative action as reverse discrimination, then you are forgetting that race mattered in the past and still matters,” said Dr. Bonilla-Silva.
Bonilla-Silva added if society can realize race does still matter, we can reach Dr. Martin Luther King’s. idea of a beloved community.
