Local Churches Bring Community Together With Food

The Bay Area Ministerial Association decided to come together and give back to a community that has given so much to them.

Peggi Potter came up with the plan of hosting a free dinner twice a month.

“Something sparked in my brain and it came to me, we need to reach out to all of these people in the community that are going to be suffering the next few months,” said Potter, a member of Sychar Lutheran Church.

The idea of doing a dinner was an obvious choice for Potter.

“I’ve been on a number of mission trips and I’ve seen poor children and poor people that their struggle from day to day is to have food. And I personally feel that that should not be an issue for anyone in this world,” said Potter.

Potter’s church reached out to the other churches in Silver Bay and found overwhelming support.

They also asked the city council to wave a fifty dollar fee to use the Silver Bay Reunion Hall to host the dinners.

“Silver bay city council gave us a very warm reception when we presented there at the December 21 council meeting,” said Pastor Stew Carlson, Sychar Lutheran Church.

But these dinners won’t only be for the laid–off mine workers.

“Our overall goal is for it to be open to not only those employed by the mines but those affected by the mining idle in every way possible.”

The churches are planning on hosting the dinners for as long as the community is still in need, every first and third Sunday of the month.
