Forum About Racism and Poverty Held in Superior

Forum Held in the Superior Public Library

Community members gathered in the Superior Public Library for an open discourse on topics like systemic racism and poverty issues in Superior.

The forum was held in light of Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen’s controversial facebook comment calling president Obama a Muslim.

“One of the things he had stated that We’d all knew needed to be a step moving forward was to have some community forums on racism and cultural understanding and reunify the community because it was so split down the middle over those comments,” said Kym Young, a human rights activist.

Hagen has since apologized but Organizers say the forum is an effort to continue civil discourse, and to bridge cultural gaps within the community

“It was important for us to not just come together symbolically but show unity,”

Organizations like Superior African Heritage Community and Politics off My body hosted the forum.

Organizers say plans for more forums like this one are in the works.
