UMD Students Inspire Local Youth

Children Living at SONA Visit UMD Campus

Some local kids got the chance to live the college life Wednesday!

The UMD University Honors Student Association invited children living at the Steve O’Neil Apartments, a low-income housing complex, to campus to show them what college life can truly be like.

The kids had the chance to learn about potential majors in a fun way in an effort to get them excited about their future.

“A lot of these kids have told us that they’ve never even talked to a college student, let alone thought about this in their future, so it’s really a privilege to be impacting these kids in that way,” explained Katie Moret, President of the University Honors Student Association.

Moret tells us after talking with leaders at CHUM they realized they could help better the kids’ futures.

“Part of ending the cycle of homelessness is giving them a good education and since that’s not something that they’ve really been concerned about as much, because they’ve been concerned about not having a home, or not having enough food, we said ‘OK we can bring them to campus,'” Moret said.

This is the second year of their partnership with CHUM.

Last year, the group helped furnish the bathrooms in the Steve O’Neil Apartments.

They’ve also had barbecues and made tie blankets with the kids.
