Shipping Season Kicks Off As First Laker Leaves Duluth
Officials Expect Slow Start To Season
The First Laker has left the Duluth port terminal, kicking off the start of the shipping season.
The Edwin H. Gott left around 4 am this morning and is heading toward two harbors to load iron ore pellets. From there the ship will head to the Soo locks to get in a queue for the down bound Lakers.
Officials say they expect the shipping season to have a slow start, due to the iron ore pellet production being down. But with some mines announcing their plans to start production again, officials hope the shipping season will pick up more in the 3rd or 4th quarter of the season.
The Soo locks are scheduled to open this Friday
