Sparks Fly at a Welding Class for Girls
Learning the Basics of a New Skill
If you ever needed proof that girls can do whatever boys can do, this is it.
Sparks fly as girls as young as eight get to try something they probably never thought they would.
At a day camp at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Superior, girls get hands on training on the basics of welding.
In full gloves, jackets, and helmets, these youngsters are doing something they’ve never done before under the close guidance of a trained instructor.
Instructor Aleasha Hladilek says she enjoys teaching girls new skills like this because it gives them the confidence to try things that they’ve never done before.
“They have never tried it before,” Hladilek said. “They’ve never been exposed to it before. But as you can see, once they get a chance they jump right in and do it.”
Hladilek also says the day camp included about a half hour unit on safety.
The girls in this day camp learned how to weld two metal plates together and weld their name into a single metal plate.
