UMD Students Celebrate Move-in Day; Police Stress Safety

A yearly tradition — students barbecuing and showing their bulldog spirit in the front lawns. While they’re trying to have a good time, campus police are trying to keep them safe.

“Move-in day is when our campus comes alive again after our break in the summer, we got four to 5,000 students moving in here on campus,” said UMD Police Chief Sean Huls.

With the campus coming alive, it’s a busy time for the police.

“We do proactive patrols and we do 911 calls and we do a lot of education prevention… telling them how to party safely if they’re going to and different ways to keep themselves safe throughout the academic year,” said Huls.

But cops aren’t solely there to write tickets, they are trying to keep students safe.

“We want to be welcoming, we want our students to know that we’re approachable and that we’re here to help,” said Huls.
