UWS Library Receives Governor’s Archives Award
Honored for preserving over 9,000 ship design documents
The University of Wisconsin–Superior library received the Governor’s Archives Award for Archival Achievement for its work with the Fraser Shipyards collection.
The library acquired the collection in 2013 and for the last three years has worked to preserve over 9,000 blueprints and design documents of large vessels.
The library says the Superior–based shipyard has been an important contributor to the maritime culture of the region.
“Having this collection here where it can be preserved and used by people for years to come is a wonderful thing that we’ve been very happy to participate in,” said Shana Aue, UW-Superior’s archivist.
Some of the archived drawings are still used today by ship modelers and engineers who are interested in the history of maritime technology.
The collection is open to the public by appointment.
