UW-Superior Veterans Group Holds Card Drive

The Need for Gratitude for Those in Service

With Veterans Day at the end of this week, one group at the University of Wisconsin-Superior is kicking off the week in a unique way.

Holiday Mail for Heroes is an effort with the Red Cross to get cards of gratitude to servicemen and women during the holidays.

The Veterans and Non-Traditional Student Center on campus is sponsoring the card drive.

Scott Holmes is a student at UWS who served in the National Guard back in the 1990s.

Holmes now works with the VNTSC as a volunteer.

“I work with so many veterans that literally just got out this spring, you know? It’s a great feeling,” Holmes said.

Participants are encouraged to write a message of thanks to men and women who are currently serving in the U.S. military.

“Just imagine being alone and not having – just a group of guys or girls or whatever – but your family,” Holmes said. “You might not have your family around. Just getting a card would make your day!”

Those organizing this card drive say the biggest need is for those serving that are not currently deployed.

They will be at the UWS Yellowjacket Union tomorrow at 11am as well.
