Officers in Hibbing Shooting Deemed ‘Authorized and Justified’

The incident happened on January 13, 2017

HIBBING, Minn. – The Hibbing Police Department has released the findings of the officer involved shooting incident that occurred on January 13, 2017.

The incident was investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and upon completion of the investigation by the agents, the information was sent to the Office of the St. Louis County Attorney for review.

After review of evidence and researching the applicable law prior, St. Louis County Attorney Mark S. Rubin and former Assistant St. Louis County Attorney Vernon Swanum, have concluded that Captain Kurt Metzig and Officer Cody Loewen of the Hibbing Police Department “constituted an authorized and justified use of deadly force upon an armed fleeing felon by peace officers and their actions were completely in compliance with and justified by Minnesota Statue Second 609.006.”
