UMD Hosts Stressless Week To Help Students Decompress Before Finals

DULUTH, Minn. — Finals season is fast approaching and UMD is taking a unique approach de-stressing.

The Kathryn A. Martin Library is doing something you wouldn’t expect; encouraging students to tear books apart.

In the week leading up to finals, the campus library is holding several book shredding events for pupils to release their anger and frustration. They’ve set aside periodicals from their de-selection project for students to destroy.

“These are materials that we’ve identified that the greenest option would is to recycle them. Which means we kind of have to take some of the covers off so, we can take the actual print, paper part out and put it in the recycling bin,” said Lisa Wheeler, Manager of Access and Collection Services Team at UMD.

According to the American College Health Association, three out of every four college students report moderate to high stress levels. The library is also hosting button making events. Students can even use the relaxation room to grab a nap or take an active break with puzzles, coloring, and Legos.
