Community Forum Held on Potential Health Impacts of NTEC Project
SUPERIOR, Wis. – A community forum against the proposed Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC) in Superior was held Tuesday evening focused on the potential health, environmental, and community impacts of the project.
The speakers were made up of tribal leaders, scientists, and health professionals.
Dr. Brittany Keyes traveled from Beloit to present at the event in Superior. Keyes said she’s seen firsthand the negative impact on her community after a similar project opened in 2019.
“As far as the negative health impact, you’ll see increased asthma rates, COPD. The air pollution is associated with increased cardiovascular disease, strokes in adults, diabetes, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases,” Keys said.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Power has said the natural gas power plant is an important part of the power company’s goal toward a carbon-free energy supply.
Minnesota power says NTEC would be a reliable power source when the wind isn’t blowing for windmills and the sun isn’t shining for solar power.
NTEC has received regulatory approvals from state and federal agencies, and state courts.
