League of Women Voters Oppose NTEC

Lwv Oppose Ntec

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Wis. — In Douglas County, the League of Women Voters is opposing a proposed natural gas electric plant in Superior.

The league says the project would have negative health effects on several groups including children, and the chronically ill.

The county chapter of the league says NTEC would contribute to climate change and negatively affect the environment. The group cites National Institutes of Health figures saying people living in the same zip code of a fuel powered plant have an:

  • 11% increase in asthma hospitalization
  • 15% increase in respiratory infections
  • 17% increase in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Supporters of the project dispute claims of any health issues. The Nemadji Trail Energy Center has received several and repeated approvals by various government and regulatory agencies.
