‘Safe Bay Program’ Begins at Vineyard Church

DULUTH, Minn.– While the Damiano Center is under construction, one church in Duluth has stepped up to provide a temporary overnight housing solution for those who need it.

However, nearby neighbors have voiced their concerns through emails.

The ‘Safe Bay’ program has been operating for several years, working alongside CHUM.

It’s an opportunity for individuals living out of their car to have a safe space to park for the night.

And the pastor of Vineyard Church told FOX 21, that this is what they’re supposed to do for the community.

“I feel really good about it because you know that’s what we’re called to by Jesus and that’s part of our church’s mission. Be the hands and feet to the community,” said Barry Schull, Compassion Ministries Director, Vineyard Church.

The building is now a part of the ‘Safe Bay’ program, where if needed, people can park their car overnight in this secure space.

“They believe that this is a task of the church, and this is what we should be doing. And the church is a lot more than just a building. The building is merely just a gathering location. And I don’t know, none of our congregation has voiced any opposition to this,” said Schull.

This program is temporary. Schull told FOX 21 they only have the permit for a year.

The last day the program is October 31st, and it’s meant to be a placeholder as construction is happening.

If you or somebody you know could benefit from this opportunity, it is recommended you visit the Vineyard Church at 6 PM to register.
