APP strike begins, bargaining stalled by legal review

DULUTH, Minn. — Today, July 01, 2025, marks the start of the Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) striking at Essentia.Essentia Logo

APP’s joined the picket lines at the Duluth, Superior, and Virginia locations.

Negotiations are currently off the table as Essentia awaits a legal review from the National Labor Relations Board.

The MNA proposed creating the APP bargaining unit in a way that Essentia believes violates the NLRB’s Health Care Rule.

Essentia asked the NLRB to review the proposed unit, and until that review is done Essentia cannot begin bargaining without waiving the right to an appeal.

This strike doesn’t impact the timeline of the legal review process.

In the meantime, Essentia is temporarily suspending some services in areas across the region.

However, about half of the APP’s chose to continue providing care limiting the disruption.

“Advanced practice providers have built trusting and caring relationships with their patients over years and in some cases generations,” said Dr. Krista Skorupa, Essentia’s East Market president, “Thanks to the dedicated clinicians showing up to provide care, Essentia is poised to continue serving patients across most of the communities who count on APPs.”
