Weekend Air Quality Alerts across Northern Minnesota
DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued varied air quality alerts across Northern Minnesota for the upcoming weekend.
The alerts range from Very Unhealthy to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.
The alerts takes effect 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 and run until 9 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Heavy surface smoke from Canadian wildfires will drift south into Minnesota over the next several days.
The Purple Alert, which means “Very Unhealthy Air” is for a swath stretching from Roseau to Hibbing, including all but the southern portion of St. Louis County and all of Cook and Lake Counties.
The Red Alert which means “Unhealthy Air” includes a smaller area to the south of the Purple Alert including Duluth, Carlton County and the Tribal Nation of Fond du Lac, plus parts of Tribal Nations of Leech Lake and Red Lake.
The Orange Alert is even further to the south. Those areas include Brainerd, Hinckley, Bemidji, East Grand Forks, and the Tribal Nations of Mille Lacs, White Earth, and .parts of Tribal Nations of Leech Lake and Red Lake. The Orange Alert means “Unhealth for Sensitive Groups”.
