Duluth Coast Guard Station Celebrates 235th ‘Coast Guard Day’

DULUTH, Minn.– Friday afternoon on the Duluth harbor of Park Point, laughs, and yells can be heard across the bay.

Because today, the Coast guard Station has something big to celebrate.

“We’re celebrating the 235th year of the Coast Guard’s founding. So, we were found in 1790 this is just a day to celebrate that. So, we get all the families and friends out here,” said Sean Whelan, Petty Officer First Class, Duluth Coast Guard.

The coastguardsmen are letting loose through friendly competition, through games of cornhole and volleyball.

“It’s a stressful job sometimes, so it’s nice to decompress. Have days like this, have the guys take a break, have fun with everybody. We love the Unity like that we have with the community,” said Whelan.

This day is also a chance for them to look back and reflect on their accomplishments.

“We’re really proud to be part of the community here in Duluth. We love the missions that we get to do, search and rescue, law enforcement, ice breaking. The community is awesome. So it’s nice to have a day to just relax, have a fun day out in the good weather and just celebrate our history,” beamed Whelan.
