Minnesota Power Reminds Customers of “Cold Weather Rule”

DULUTH, Minn. — With the seasons changing and cold air on the way, Minnesota Power is reminding customers about the state’s “Cold Weather Rule.”

The rule prevents residential customers from getting their natural gas or electric service shut off for non-payment between Oct. 1, and Apr. 30.

Minnesota Power encourages customers, who believe the higher winter bills will be too much, to contact them to find a payment plan that works because the bills that aren’t paid will come due after Apr. 30.

“What a cold weather rule payment plan is, it is a lower amount payment plan based on unique financial circumstances of the customer,” said Minnesota Power’s Director of Customer Experience Operations Tina Koecher.

“We don’t dictate what that is, so much as we work with the customer to figure out what works for them during the cold weather rule months, which are our winter months here in Minnesota, Oct. 1, through Apr. 30.

The Cold Weather Rule also applies to customers in Wisconsin with Superior Water Light and Power, with the rule there begins Nov. 1. and ends Apr. 15.
