Local Law Enforcement Holds Multi-Jurisdictional Training Exercise At UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Police departments met on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus to conduct a training exercise.

They warned students and community members ahead of time that there would be a large police presence on site, as they simulated a hostage situation at the school.

The exercise involved multiple agencies across Northwestern Wisconsin and Minesota working together in a controlled environment, which the officers on campus were happy to be a part of…

“When we got to talking about the training being on and near campus, it just kind of morphed into our officers responding to it as well, just going to use it as an opportunity to put together what could be a real-life scenario and how the multiple agencies will respond and work together,” said UW-Superior Police Chief Joe Eickman

These types of opportunities are important for departments to work together, but also to learn from each other.

“We train quite a bit as all agencies do, but we usually train separately, so being able to get together, find out where our training might be a little bit different, and ways we can integrate that training, so we are more effective as a group, that’s what these scenarios are really beneficial for,” said Paul Winterscheidt, chief of police with the Superior Police Department.

The exercise also helped further relationships between departments and concluded on the afternoon of Nov. 1.
