Large group of community members attend ICE out of Duluth Sit-in at City Hall

Sit In Wide Shot

DULUTH, Minn.–Bright and early on a freezing Friday morning, a large group of community members, gathered in solidarity to protest against ICE escalations.

“I was very impressed with the turnout. Our car didn’t start, so I didn’t know if it was going to be a little bit lower of a turnout, but everyone did definitely turn out,” said Kaylee Spencer, an attendee.

The Duluth City Hall Rotunda was filled with nearly one hundred people.

Each attendee came to this event with a single goal, to voice their concerns about the ongoing issue of ICE’s presence throughout the state.

“I am here for my grandchildren. I’m a 73-year-old grandmother. I’m a long time Minnesotan, and I see our democracy leaving us,” said Jeanette Behr, an attendee.

The sit in, led by the Twin Ports Democratic Socialists of America was filled with chanting, sign displays, and keynote speakers.

It brought awareness to what the organizers are calling, an injustice.

“We’re watching the overreach of this federal regime and that is going to continue engaging people and frustrating people. We’re seeing how neighborhoods are organizing in Minneapolis. We’re seeing how neighborhoods are organizing here in Duluth,” said Brandon Parker, Membership Secretary, Twin Ports Democratic Socialists of America.

One attendee said, despite being isolated from what is taking place in Minneapolis it’s still important to express urgency for what is happening throughout the state.

“They’re scared to leave their homes. So, we are a little bit more removed up here. We understand that privilege, and while they’re not coming to our door at this moment, it does affect all of us,” said Spencer. “I hope that our elected officials hear us, that they see that we are gathered here in solidarity statewide for change.”
