Sunday June 14, will mark the first anniversary of the Duluth Police Activities League.
DPAL was set up as a community oriented policing measure that allows officers to interact with youth and build relationships in positive, constructive manners.
In its first year of existence DPAL hosted five events for area youngsters, including a three-on-three basketball tournament and a punt pass and kick competition.
According to Duluth Police officer Tom Sewell, the punt pass and kick event drew around 80 competitors last year and a larger turn out is expected this year.
Sewell said he’s already receiving calls about the event from youth football programs in Proctor and Hermantown.
The Duluth Police Activities League will be introducing a new event for older teenagers this year too.
They will be teaming with Mark Lane and Center Line Systems to conduct their first Basic Outdoor Survival Skills (and archery) or BOSS program.
Officer Sewell said program participants will learn survival skills like how to build a fire and shelter in the event that they ever become lost, or stranded in the forest or wilderness.
