Program Offers Free Lunch to Kids in Superior

Many children in Superior receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the school year.

Local efforts are stepping in to make sure some of them do not go hungry now that school is out.

This year marks the 40th year for the Summer Food Service Program.

Since it’s very underutilized Wisconsin is trying to increase participation for the free service by 10% in 2015.

“There’s no reason to feel ashamed,” Superior School District Summer Nutrition Manager Paulette Yadon said. “I mean we don’t ask for any income, anybody can come.”

Any child 18 and younger can eat a free, cold bag lunch at 25 different sites throughout Superior.

Yadon tells FOX 21 all the meals are healthy and consist of fresh fruit, vegetables and milk.

“It’s a good thing for parents to be able to have their kids, just take them to the park and get a free lunch,” said Yadon. “It’s hard in the economy right now the prices are so high. Even when I go to the grocery store trying to budget for a breakfast, a lunch and a supper. At least this takes the strain off a couple of the meals for the family.”

Last year the Summer Food Service Program served more than 50,000 meals and snacks in Superior.

The free service will run until August 21st.

Schools in Superior will also start to serve free meals starting June 22nd.

Skate Park : Lunch 11:30 – 12:00
Boys & Girls Club : Lunch 12:30 – 1:00 Snack 3:30 – 4:00
Peter Rich Center : Breakfast 7:45 – 8:30 Lunch 12:00 1:00

Lakeside Terrace mhp: Lunch 12:00 -12:30
June 17th – August 7th
