Several Earth Day Themed Displays Pop Up on UMD Campus

Environmentally-Friendly Information Expos

As you stroll through the Kirby Student Center on campus at UMD during Earth Day, you can’t miss the array of displays centered on green living, and environmentally-conscious lifestyles.

The Sustainability Fair is a collection of booths and information about businesses and volunteer opportunities centered on sustainability.

According to those involved, sustainability refers to things we can do to make sure the Earth is healthy enough to sustain human life.

And communication is key to that message.

“There are lots of good things happening and students aren’t aware of all of it,” said Janel Kloth from the Office of Sustainability. “Because we do our best to communicate with everybody, but having this table here and having all these people come, it helps support what we’re trying to do.”

A few groups on and off campus deemed this Earth Day as Bus, Bike, Walk Day as well.

Their display centered around information about “green transport.”

Instead of taking the car around campus or around car, they are encouraging students to take more environmentally-friendly modes of transportation.

“It’s a lot cheaper to be green than you would think,” said Cedar Lechner-Reihle, an Environmental Task Force Leader on campus. “Riding the bus or your bike or walking to school, you don’t have to pay for gas. It’s good for you; it’s good for your health. And it’s good for the environment.”

UMD will also have a campus beautification and clean-up day from 9am to noon at the Solon Campus Center Saturday morning.
