UWS Grad Reflects On Career With Doris Roberts

'She Did Every Scene With Her Heart'

The reflection and connection to the late Doris Roberts is strong right here in the Twin Ports.

1985 UW-Superior graduate Sarah Jane Hale worked on set with Roberts for all nine seasons of “Everybody Loves Raymond” as a stand-in for Patricia Heaton, who played Debra Barone on the CBS hit show.

“She did every scene with her heart. Whether it was funny, or whether it was one of those sweet scenes she had with Peter Boyle, she did every scene with her heart. And I learned from that,” said Hale explained to FOX 21’s Dan Hanger.

Hale told Hanger that Roberts was an amazing fighter for equal rights, especially for women, and she says she did so with grace during a time when Hollywood was truly a man’s world.

“She never lost that spirit and when she no longer had to fight for herself she would fight for other people … because people would listen to her. Who wouldn’t listen to Doris Roberts, my goodness,” Hale reflected.

Sarah most recently was a dialogue coach on Two Broke Girls.

She recently left that job and Hollywood after 30 years in the business to come back home to Superior to start a singing career with her friend, Joe Lindzius.

You can find the duo (“Similar Dogs”) singing every Saturday and Sunday at the Thirsty Pagen in Superior.

Hale says her decision to make the drastic career move was, in part, motivated by Roberts.
