Family Shares Story Of Escaping From House Fire

Mother, Son and Dog Lose Home

As we approach the colder months fire departments are preparing to get a little busier.

One Duluth family escaped from a fire last week on Tioga Street. The family is happy to be alive, but they do have advice for others.

Kim Madill says she woke up last Wednesday around 2 a.m. to the sounds of crackling.
When she looked out her window she noticed flames and hurried to get her son and dog out of the house. Once outside, reality set in and shock started to fade.

She credits her son’s school for teaching him what to do during a fire, and the fact that the family had a plan for emergencies.

“This didn’t happen during the day, it wasn’t something I was aware what was happening,” said Madill. “It was something that happened in the spur of the moment and you have to think of what you learned.”

Madill’s only regret is not getting renter’s insurance.

She says even though they’ve basically been left with nothing there is one valuable that got out that’s irreplaceable.

“We try to look at the positives, which is the three of us,” said Madill.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with their expenses.
