Security Struggles for Planned Parenthood

Officials have reviewed security in the wake of Colorado Springs attack

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin officials announced today that they will not be reopening its clinic in Appleton, one of three in the state, because they are unable to meet sufficient security standards. The clinic suspended operations last year.

Officials said, Monday, that they reviewed security in the wake of an attack on a Colorado Springs clinic and decided that they could not meet necessary security standards.

They say the closure is a loss for women in the northern and central parts of the state.

Planned Parenthood will still offer abortion services at clinics in Madison and Milwaukee.

The organization won a huge legal victory last year, when a federal appeals court panel struck down a Republican-authored law that required abortion providers to obtain admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The U.S. Supreme Court this past June struck down a similar admitting privileges law in Texas and refused to take up the Wisconsin case, effectively ending the dispute.
