An Ojibwe Author Passes Away
Complications from cancer take the life of James Northrup Jr.
The family of Jim Northrup has informed FOX 21 of his passing.
He passed away at around 8:40 p.m. on Monday August 1 evening to complications from kidney cancer.
Northrup was an Anishinaabe author, poet, playwright, and Marine. His works include “Walking the Rez Road,” “Dirty Copper,” and “Shinnob Jep.” Many of his works describe the changes on the reservation that have resulted from the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 and his experiences within assimilation schools. He served in the United States Marines Indian Company during the Vietnam War.
A traditional fire has been started at his residence and all are welcome to visit and pay their respects.
The wake and funeral will be conducted in the Anishinaabeg way.
The wake will be held on Thursday, August 4th at Seven p.m. at the Sawyer Center.
The funeral will be held on Friday, August 5th at ten a.m. at the Sawyer Center.
