Douglas County Humane Society Celebrates 50 Years of Rescuing and Adopting

SUPERIOR, Wis.– Today’s ribbon cutting out in Superior didn’t highlight something brand new.  But instead, over 50 years of tail wagging, smiles, and connections to furry friends.

“We’ve gone through a couple different buildings. At this point, we’ve had different animals and staff come through, but the whole mission has always been the same, and that is to care for the animals here in our community, and make sure they get adopted,” said Jule Hand, Fundraising Coordinator, Douglas County Humane Society.

To keep this shelter going for all these years, officials said there’s many people to shout out.

Everyone from volunteers, staff, and of course, the ones searching for their new companions.

“I think the animal community is very important, and with these shelters, we are taking care of the lost souls. Technically, we’re the ones who get away. So, we have plenty of lost and stray animals that come in. We try to re home them when we can,” said Hand.

Around 1,100 animals make their way through these doors every year.

And even with how repetitive things can get, there are some feelings that never go away.

“You can’t put into words what it feels like to have these animals. You know, you go back there and it’s a tough thing to see. So, when they are rescued and you know, they’re changing the lives of their owners, it’s a very rewarding thing,” said James Lundgreen, Board Member & Treasurer at Douglas County Humane Society.

To celebrate this accomplishment, the humane society has a golden ticket program.

Certain animals have their adoption fees fully sponsored to get them one step closer to finding a forever home.

And those animals in the spotlight will remain fully sponsored until they get adopted.
