Trail Access Restricted Due to Crosby Fire

FINLAND, Minn.– When the Crosby Fire began last week, the DNR and Superior Hiking Trail officials wasted no time implementing safety measures.

“We just got word of the fire, kind of beginning yesterday, kind of coordinated with the DNR. We didn’t hear until about 5:30 kind of in the evening, about looking to close a section of the Superior Hiking Trail,” explained Justin Otsea, Trail Stewardship Director, Superior Hiking Trail.

As the fire continues to grow, both state parks, and trails around the North Shore are staying on top of safety measures.

Pairing up with the DNR for quick decision making, Superior Hiking Trail officials said, they can’t be too cautious.

“Originally they were leaving it open, but I think with the estimated winds shifting overnight, which has happened, kind of moving, which could move the fire towards the trail. Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to work with them to close it down,” said Otsea.

And in real time, they’re updating and staying on top of relaying information.

“The State Park is actually still open, but our section of through hiking kind of goes to a more remote part of the park, and that’s where the closure is happening. So, you know, I’ve kind of relayed that information onto our social media, developed a map that includes a reroute for the through hikers,” said Otsea.

The Superior Hiking Trail consistently updates their website for closures. In addition, the Minnesota Incident Command System also provides containment and fire growth updates.
