Shoveling Snow Safely

Strenuous Activity Can Cause Back Injuries and Chest Pains

With the snow outside in many parts of the Northland, a lot of people are outside shoveling their driveways and sidewalks.

But if not done carefully, physically strenuous activities, like snow shoveling can cause back injuries, and even heart attacks.  Medical experts ask that if you feel chest pain, or even left arm pain while shoveling, to go see a doctor.

“When you’re shoveling it’s important to go slow, not try to rush through it, make sure you give yourself enough time to pay attention to how your body is reacting to the heavy snow,” said Kaitlyn Hanzlik a physician’s assistant at St. Luke’s.

Medical Experts also say it’s important to use your legs more than your lower back to shovel, to protect your back.
