Dog Food Sold in Minnesota Recalled for Pentobarbital Contamination

Five lots of Hunk of Beef have been voluntarily recalled

An Illinois-based pet food company is voluntarily recalling one of its products after four dogs became sick and one died after consuming the company’s dog food.

Evanders Dog & Cat Food is recalling five lots of its Hunk of Beef product due to potential contamination with Pentobarbital, which can affect animals causing drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea, and in extreme cases, death.

Lot numbers include 1816E03HB, 1816E04HB, 1816E06HB, 1816E07HB, and 1816E13HB, and have an expiration date of June 2020. The second half of the barcode reads 20109, which can be found on the back of the product label.

All lots being voluntarily recalled were distributed in retail locations and sold online in the following states: Washington, California, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida and were manufactured the week of June 6 – June 13, 2016.

The dog that passed away had consumed the product with lot number 1816E06HB.

Evanger’s said today, “We feel we have been let down by our supplier, and in reference to the possible presence of pentobarbital, we have let down our customers. Despite having a relationship for forty years with the supplier of this specific beef, who also services many other pet food companies, we have terminated our relationship with them and will no longer purchase their beef for use in our Hunk of Beef product.”
