Struggling Hayward School Dist. Turns To Tax Payers

The Hayward School District is out of money and the only way out, officials say, is a referendum. The referendum will ask voters to approve nearly $3 million above the state-mandated operating revenue limit starting next school year and continuing for future years. This part of the money is to restore teachers and programs.

School leaders are concerned over low staffing levels affecting the learning environment for students.

“Our goal here is to give each child the best education possible weather they go into the military, tech school, or college. We want to give them the best opportunity.” Harry Malcolm, from the Hayward School Board said.

The district hopes voters pass the referendum to continue its tradition of quality education.

“This year we are actually $300,000 in debt. You can’t keep taking from your saving account forever.” Malcolm said.
