U.S. Ice Breaker

The U.S. Coast Guard has started up it’s winter ice breaking operations.The Coast Guard has started Operation Taconite which is the largest domestic icebreaking operation as part of the operation The Coast Guard Cutter Alder has been assigned to manage the ice breaking needs of Western Lake Superior specifically ice breaking the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior.

The Coast Guard recommends all recreational ice dress appropriately, use caution on the ice and stay away from the shipping channels.
