AARP Ranks Minnesota as Number One State for Retirement

Northlanders Say the Lifestyle Drew Them Here

Minnesota was ranked as the best state to retire in, according to AARP, the biggest advocate for the elderly in the country.

According to AARP, Minnesota has the most senior housing units per elderly resident in the country. The number is a whopping 125 housing units per 1,000 older adults. The national median is 27. But that’s not the only appeal. We spoke to community members who moved to Minnesota to retire. They said the relaxing lifestyle is what drew them here.

“We like the outdoors so we’re outside a lot and that’s a wonderful appeal for Northern Minnesota,” said Sue Minter, a retiree.

Minnesota has a growing population of retirees, and in the Twin Cities, that number is expected to double by 2040.
