City Council Votes On Street Light Fee

The Duluth City Council is going over the street light fee phase-out, which is in its second year.

The end goal of the five-year plan is to eliminate the $5 fee citizens pay each month.

The flat fees for city maintenance were implemented during the recession and are no longer necessary, according to councilors.

“These fees and this fee in particular is a hidden tax and I think it is an unfair tax that city of Duluth citizens are paying. And we’re transitioning that into a more fair system through the property tax levy,” said city councilor Zach Filipovich.

In the first year, the fee was reduced to $4.50.

And with a vote to move forward Monday night that passed, the fee will be cut another dollar starting in January.
