A simple childhood toy is being used to spark conversations at a local school about bullying.

Lowell Elementary is taking part in “Kindness in Chalk”.

The main entrance to the school is filled with brightly colored messages like, ‘Be a Buddy, not a Bully’ pictures of sunshine and smiley faces.

During parents conferences this week and next, families are encouraged to “Chalk a Positive Message”.

A mom in the Twin Cities came up with the idea, which has since spread to schools across the state.

The hope is that the family-friendly event spurs discussions about bullying, which can have many adverse effects like depression, anxiety and sleep difficulties.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics 1 out of every 4 children reported being bullied during the school year and only 36-percent told an adult or person in authority what was happening.

“It is getting everyone involved and the word out about bullies in schools. Kids and adults being bullies – it happens an just knowing what to do in case that situation arises and who are safe people to go and talk to or kids who feel safe with certain adults can go and talk to them,” said Lowell Elementary’s School Social Worker Amanda Borling.

The hope is that “Kindness in Chalk” talk spreads to other schools within the Northland.
